Here are some of the beautiful children starship have helped
Miller Asha Shauni Jacob19th April 2021 - 5th May 2021
16 precious days x A wriggly, long haired beauty. Starship gave us time to get to know our beautiful strong daughter. |
Samuel Frew24th August 2010
A strong 10 year old Starship performed a lifesaving heart operation on the 31st March 2011, when Sam was 7 months. Thanks to Starship we have our smily Sam. |
Kayden Gurney15th March 2011
A vibrant 9 year old Starship performed an operation as Kayden has right side hemiplegia. He got an arm operation to try to straighten it. |
When we got to Starship, they told us that she also had Bronchilitis and Pneumonia which meant that she was going to need to stay on a ventilator to do her breathing. For Waiaua she would require this for at least a week before we could look at giving her a lower breathing support option. We thought that we had got her illness under control, so she was taken off the ventilator, to only have to go back on it 72 hours later because her breathing became too hard for her to manage. Waiaua was only 1 of 28 (24 were all RSV positive) admissions at that time - there are only 20 bed spaces. They had to make do by slotting beds into and extra space they could find to ensure that these babies had a chance to recover from RSV. During this time, Starship had given us so much support and the nurses and doctors always made sure they explained things step by step to provide comfort and ease for us parents. Without the equipment needed, the expertise of the Paediatric Doctors in Starship, and the level of care the nurses provided in the 4 weeks we were in Starship, Waiaua wouldn’t have made a full recovery.
The growths had left him a needle sized airway to breath through - he is lucky to be alive. 10 years on, close to 100 surgical procedures to date and more to come. We are so grateful for everyone at Starship Hospital that has contributed to Jai’s journey over the years.
Zeke Ryan16th March 2010
An exploring 11 year old Zeke has ongoing health issues. The latest thing is his severe obstructive sleep apnea. This was diagnosed by the respiratory team at Starship. After years of sleepless nights we finally have a diagnosis. Although sorting this out is not going to be achieved over night, at least we finally have an answer. We are having regular consultations and we are grateful for their support Zeke together. |
